the Spiritual Warrior that lives

Spirit Warriors Martial Arts
offers an integrated and holistic
martial arts program.
It is not really just a martial
art, it is a combat science with
emphasis on personal development,
enhancing health and wellbeing
and creating a deeper understanding
of yourself. Our system is called
Black Tiger Kung Fu.
There are several things that
make our program unique. So let’s
take a look at some of them.
There are No Belts, Uniforms,
or Hierarchy to detract you from
your training. You are treated
equally in class and with the
respect you deserve, not because
of rank. Black Tiger is an individualized
system focused on developing what
works best for each person, not
trying to mimic the instructor
or someone else. Students learn
what their natural responses and
tendencies are and work with them.
This means everyone is included
in class and you are allowed to
train to the best of your abilities.
You Learn to effectively defend
yourself in any situation. Black
Tiger is a complete martial art
that teaches you to thrive not
just survive. You will constantly
be challenged with new and different
situations: Grabs, locks, chokes,
weapons, ground, multiple attackers,
Law Enforcement specific work,
work when handicapped or bound,
in your car, seated and more.
There are very few Kata or Forms.
They are used to teach concepts
and principals of movement. As
a result you maximize your self-defense
training time. While Kata may
help some people initially, there
are far superior ways to increase
your proficiency. Our training
focus is “hands-on,” because you
need a tactile understanding of
how to deal with an attacker.
Not working with a partner is
like trying to become a better
swimmer by going through the motions
without ever getting in the water.
There is a popular martial art
saying, “you can’t think and fight.”
You can’t waste time in a vain
attempt to remember what to do
while someone is in the process
of punching you in the face.
Our focus is on skill development,
not memorizing a bunch of techniques.
Really, who cares what technique
#47 is? Black Tiger is based on
natural movement, biomechanics,
physiology and instinctive responses
instead of relying on “remembering
the right move.” Your body will
learn to protect itself without
conscious thought. If you have
to think it is probably already
too late.
Human beings are physical, mental
and emotional creatures and each
component contributes to effective
self-defense training. Most arts
only focus on the physical skills.
However, what people do physically
is determined by their thoughts
and emotions. If you are full
of fear you will respond differently
than if you are under control
and calm. If you are distracted
and not paying attention to your
immediate environment you may
not even notice a threat until
it is too late. Taking all of
these factors into account adds
a whole different dimension to
your training.
We have a strong moral and ethical
code. Simply put, to get better
at Black Tiger you become a better
person. A core belief in Black
Tiger is compassion for other
people and the sanctity of human
life which should be protected
at all times. You will learn to
defend yourself with the least
harm to others at the same time.
This is why Black Tiger students
are humble and don’t have the
“macho,” “I’m the toughest guy
around” mentality so prevalent
in martial arts today. There is
also the legal side to this. How
much force is justified in protecting
yourself? What can you legally
do to defend yourself under certain
circumstances? You will learn
about civil and criminal responsibility
so you will make choices that
not only protect you in a self-defense
situation but also after, when
everyone else is judging you and
the actions you took.
There’s much more to martial arts
training than just self-defense,
which is why Black Tiger teaches
you a complete system of health
and fitness including: proper
breathing, relaxation and movement.
Black Tiger is an approach to
life well beyond combat. You will
gain knowledge of anatomy and
physiology, body mechanics and
how your body operates. The good
news is that all aspects of the
training in Black Tiger reinforce
each other. The health exercises
will improve your self-defense
and your self-defense training
will improve your health.
We train hard but we have fun
too. There is no yelling, screaming
or intimidation that are typical
of many martial arts classes.
Instead, in Black Tiger you will
learn to smile and even laugh
while training. Learning to access
these positive emotions is what
allows your body to remain free
and do its job of defending itself.
In addition, all of the breathing
work and physical conditioning
drills are specifically designed
to charge your body with energy,
not drain it. You will be able
to work out and continue with
your day feeling better instead
of being ready to collapse.
There will be no teacher barking
orders out at you in class. Your
teachers will work right alongside
you. They will demonstrate physically
with you so you can feel how the
skills work. This hands-on approach
will immediately get your body
to move correctly and learn through
tactile stimulation. Feeling what
is happening is far more important
than watching someone else do
it or try to explain it in words.
Finally, Black Tiger is fun!
Yes, you can have fun and enjoy
learning to defend yourself and
others. In fact, the more fun
you have and the more relaxed
you are the faster you learn.
You will find helpful teachers
and students who will answer all
of your questions and give you
all the help you need to achieve
your goals.
I look forward to seeing you
in class. Please call me if you
have any questions.
